The San Francisco International Terminal served as the centerpiece of SFO's Master Plan Program and established a new standard for international passenger facilities. Opened in 2000, the two-million-square-foot terminal was the largest international terminal in North America at the time of construction and remains one of the world's largest base-isolated buildings, designed to withstand major seismic events while maintaining airport operations.
The terminal includes 26 international gates, more than 140,000 square feet of concessions, advanced baggage handling systems, extensive customs and immigration facilities, and direct connections to AirTrain and BART. Designed to process approximately 5,000 arriving international passengers per hour, the facility significantly expanded SFO's international capacity while enhancing passenger comfort, operational efficiency, and long-term resilience.
As a member of the joint venture construction management team, EPC Consultants provided program management, construction management, resident engineering, inspection, QA/QC code compliance, value engineering, materials testing oversight, systems startup, project controls, CADD support, and administrative services. EPC played a key role in delivering one of the most significant airport infrastructure projects in the United States.
