The San Francisco–Oakland Bay Bridge East Span Replacement Project replaced the original East Span of the Bay Bridge with a modern, seismically resilient structure designed to withstand major earthquakes while improving safety, reliability, and long-term transportation capacity. Constructed following the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake, the new bridge features the world's largest self-anchored suspension bridge and an elevated skyway connecting Oakland to Yerba Buena Island. The replacement span opened to traffic in 2013 and is recognized as one of California's most significant transportation infrastructure investments.
The project included construction of new bridge structures, approach viaducts, roadway systems, utility improvements, and a dedicated bicycle and pedestrian pathway while maintaining traffic along one of the nation's busiest transportation corridors. Designed for a service life of more than 150 years, the new East Span enhances regional mobility while providing a safer, more resilient crossing for the San Francisco Bay Area.
EPC provided construction management support for this landmark transportation project, assisting with construction oversight, contractor coordination, quality assurance, field engineering, and project documentation. Working collaboratively with Caltrans and project stakeholders, EPC helped support the successful delivery of one of the largest and most technically challenging bridge replacement projects in California history.
