RiverRenew Tunnel Program

The RiverRenew Tunnel Program is the largest infrastructure investment in the City of Alexandria's history and a transformative environmental initiative designed to dramatically improve water quality in the Potomac River and its tributaries. The program includes construction of a 2.2-mile-long, 12-foot-diameter deep sewer tunnel, a state-of-the-art underground pumping station, interceptor improvements, and supporting infrastructure that captures combined sewer overflows during wet weather events and conveys them to AlexRenew's wastewater treatment facility for treatment. Following eight years of planning, design, and construction, RiverRenew became fully operational in July 2026.

Now complete, the RiverRenew system prevents approximately 120 million gallons of untreated combined sewage from entering the Potomac River each year, reducing combined sewer overflows by approximately 98 percent and significantly improving the environmental health of the Potomac River, Hooffs Run, and Hunting Creek. The project represents a major investment in sustainable infrastructure and will benefit the Alexandria community for generations to come.

EPC provided resident engineering, tunnel inspection, heavy civil construction inspection, quality assurance, and safety oversight services throughout construction. EPC's team supported construction administration, independent acceptance inspection, constructability reviews, risk and safety management, change management, document management, and compliance with the City of Alexandria's Third Party and Special Inspection requirements, helping deliver one of the Mid-Atlantic region's most significant environmental infrastructure projects.
