Mission Valley East, Light Rail Extension, San Diego State University


The Mission Valley East Light Rail Extension project involved the construction of a new underground trolley station, cut-and-cover tunnels, a tunnel utilizing the New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM) and related surface and underground work at the campus of San Diego State University (SDSU). The work included but was not limited to excavation; cast-in-place concrete for the underground cut-and-cover tunnel and underground station; tunneling via NATM construction; installation of concrete tunnel lining; installation of mechanical, electrical and communications facilities; installation of pavers, concrete pavement, curbs and gutters, and sidewalks; permanently or temporarily relocating and rerouting existing underground utilities that included piped chilled water, gas, sewer, water and storm drainage systems; and installation of landscape planting and irrigation systems.

EPC provided construction management services including: Office Engineering, civil inspection, Mechanical/electrical/Plumbing (MEP) inspection, instrumentation inspection, and tunnel inspection. EPC was the main firm overseeing work on the NATM tunnel.
