The East Bay Municipal Utility District’s (EBMUD) Digester Upgrade Project is the second phase of the rehabilitation of digesters at the Main Wastewater Treatment Plant (MWWTP) in Oakland, CA.
The $38 million project included the demolition of four existing floating digester covers; the construction of new fixed digester covers and interior draft tube mixers, construction of new concrete pile-supported raw sludge blend tanks, installation of 5 and 7 to primary digesters; improvements to all sludge piping systems; new Fats, Oils, and Greases (FOG) receiving facility with odor control equipment; construction of a new electrical substation and motor control center; electrical, instrumentation and HVAC improvements; abatement and demolition of a 28,000 SF former U.S. Army building; and site improvements.

To maintain proper plant operations, no more than two digesters were allowed to be out of service at any time and all contractor activities were coordinated with existing plant operations to avoid any interference with the treatment plant’s day-to-day operations.
